Construction costs are currently skyrocketing

Received an "offer" for photovoltaic. €9,800 for 4.500 kWp on a simple pitched roof. Nicely calculated by the salesperson, it pays off after 19.9 years. Calculated with realistic numbers, I unfortunately have to reject the "offer." Don't they want the contract? Oh, by the way... it's without storage :rolleyes:

We paid about the same in 2020 (gross). I know that was expensive for the time - we ordered it through the general contractor, rookie mistake - but for today, I would have assumed that it's no longer that expensive?

Net! I could have accepted it if it had been gross, but like this? Even though the city of Cologne subsidizes €250 per kWp.

But that is partly due to the size. Fill the roof completely, each incremental module extra does not cost that much anymore.

You have many fixed costs anyway, which are independent of the system size: scaffolding, registration, electrician, field service...

I’m afraid it’s unfortunately just the indicator that much less construction and renovation will take place and therefore less wood will be needed. That means the big buyers are missing and that creates a massive oversupply. Good for everyone who currently needs some or is up for a project, but not an indicator of a general trend reversal for me. Unfortunately...

Yes, that is also explained in the article. Especially in the USA there is a massive decline in construction activity and the wood is piling up. However, I rather see this as a return to normality than as a crisis in the construction industry. Of course, there will be some corrections there as well – the boom times are just over. If that leads to no longer any arbitrary (fantasy) price being demanded and paid, that is not necessarily a bad development either. We’ll see… :)

So when I read here that construction timber costs 680 euros per solid cubic meter, I already see a ceiling downward: Softwood has a calorific value of about 1400 kWh/m3 stacked cubic meter and 2000 kWh/m3 solid cubic meter. That's around 30 cents/kWh calorific value in the home fireplace.

For natural gas, 13 cents/kWh is quoted in the future at the wholesale market. As of now. It is likely to rise. In addition, there are surcharges from the supplier.

And even if the price remained the same: wood can be stacked at home, gas cannot. And whether there will still be sufficient gas coming from the network/allowed to be withdrawn in winter is also a bit of an issue....
