It is simply different everywhere whether meters are allowed and under what conditions. With us it is allowed, even with self-installation without inspections/seals or anything. So the cost is 20€ every 5 years.

But this summer was simply too hot, we already stopped watering early because it was pointless. 10 cubic on the meter for this year.

With us, it was mandatory to have it installed by a specialist company, but that was manageable. Around 50-80€ or so? You get the costs back after a few years.

There are plenty of plants that can cope with dryness, including native ones, and they also look good. There are enough people who pour gravel on so that it is dry enough for these plants. Dryness itself is not the problem, but water-hungry plants during dryness and large unshaded open spaces. Watering is really only necessary in the vegetable garden and during the establishment phase (which can sometimes take longer with trees).
