There are plenty of plants that can cope with dryness, including native ones, and they also look good. There are enough people who pour gravel on so that it is dry enough for these plants. Dryness itself is not the problem, but water-hungry plants during dryness and large unshaded open spaces. Watering is really only necessary in the vegetable garden and during the establishment phase (which can sometimes take longer with trees).

Design the garden so that it hardly needs watering. I hardly watered some plants at all or only 1-2 times, even after more than 3 months without any water from above and the heat.

Only edible plants received water regularly.

And by the way... I thought the roadside edges were much more beautiful this summer than last. Last year, there was only grass along the roadside everywhere. This year, it often bloomed colorfully... at least until the public works department came according to plan, mowed all the green, and left the brown behind...

Well, but if you have a finished garden with lots of bamboo, you don't want to change it.

Fortunately, we have a well.

So I have two separate meters for my garden because I have two outdoor water taps. These were once read by a city employee and otherwise, I always remove them when the frosty season comes and screw them back on the next summer. I then just have to report the meter readings for all 3 meters when the time comes again. I also watered less this summer than usual because after the vacation I already saw the fight against the heat as lost. However, it apparently varies greatly from municipality to municipality what is allowed and what is not.
