If the Chinese hadn't taken their strict path from the beginning, it would have had massive effects on the world. Besides millions of deaths in their country, the supply chains would indeed have collapsed. Calling that a wrong path is quite astonishing.Occam's razor would consider that unlikely. The Chinese leadership has long claimed how superior they were to the West. Now they can't get out of that situation without losing face and are going through with it, no matter what. In a functioning democracy, politicians are voted out if they hold on to wrong paths for too long. And that's why loopholes are eventually sought to be able to change opinion (requirements from the EU, demands from coalition partners or federal states, ...). In an autocratic system, there is neither the direct pressure of being voted out nor a larger part of the excuses. And that's why all supply chains with Chinese components (so very many) will still be quite tense this year.
