20 years ago I was still a student and mobile phones were an important topic. The majority of students had one. And among the general population, it must have been over 50%. WiFi already existed, but was uninteresting to us students. Instead, people tended to discuss BNC vs Ethernet for the next LAN party. When I started studying nearly 20 years ago, the full satellite TV program was streamed into the university network. Multicast, receivable on any PC with VLC, there were even a few test programs in Full HD. At that time DSL was just starting, but as a student you had 100MBit privately, even in upload! Back home one was always eagerly awaited with all the backup copies :D

I basically agree with you, but when I still see the permanently installed ISDN sockets in the desk in some hotels today, the USB sockets, etc., and of course also LAN sockets, I wonder what of that is made to last for the duration you normally spend in such a building in your lifetime. You can change a wireless standard more easily than sockets and wiring. We laid CAT 7 cables in almost all rooms three years ago, but hardly use them.

Indeed, we have an access point in the garden, not just for mobile devices. In the age of IoT, that is eventually indispensable.

I absolutely agree with you, we have planned empty conduits in the house and garden, high-voltage power is connected in the garage, who knows what else will come. We didn’t even install a satellite dish; we also use Magenta TV, etc., everything only via the internet now.

Most comments reinforce my opinion that LAN will become unnecessary for me.

That depends very much on x and especially the size of the TV. ;) The resolution capacity of the human eye basically does not vary much from person to person, so you can calculate all of that well - if you want to. If you don’t care, of course, that’s the end of it.

I wouldn’t even agree to that. I stream 4k movies via Wi-Fi without any problems. The bottlenecks are much more likely the connection to the house and the providers’ servers.

WiFi 6 will establish itself in the next few years. It offers data rates of up to 11 Gbit/s. Theoretically... but even the practical number will be so high that you will hardly overload your own house connection.

We take the middle way: on 150 sqm, 4-5 Ubiquiti APs well distributed to LAN sockets. The in-wall APs then also have 2 LAN sockets integrated, in case you need to connect something with a cable after all.

4-5 LAN sockets are reasonably inexpensive.

When I see photos where 10 sockets and 4 LAN sockets are stuck side by side on all walls, it shakes me internally. Always with the addition "in case you ever need it. I don’t like power strips." Absolutely not my taste. I’d rather cleverly put a power strip in the cabinet, don’t see it, and also don’t have to look at a sea of sockets where no piece of furniture stands.

But to each their own.

If only WLAN anyway, then the implementation like at moHouse can only be recommended. Just one router for the whole house is a thing of the last millennium.
