Without the taxi service from parents and grandparents, this changes quickly, because no child wants to cycle or walk anymore. Just look at the training times of sports clubs; kids from 7 to 18 are brought and picked up. Bicycle, why?

I can at least confirm this for two of my nephews. One finally got his driver’s license at 19, but doesn’t dare to drive, especially not on the highway... (it’s so dangerous there and everyone drives so fast). The car bought for him was sold after 1 year with cobwebs on the wheels. Even now at 22, he is driven by his dad from the eastern Ruhr area to his university near the Dutch border, because he also doesn’t want to take the train. And the other has been trying to get his driver’s license for 2 years (!!!) (the driving instructor is unpleasant to him, so he’s not motivated), now he is 19 and is also driven everywhere by his mom/dad...

Good grief, I never thought I’d say something like this, but there seems to be something to the talk about the soft youth.

That’s not soft, THAT is – old-fashioned word – spoiled. You don’t want to drive a car, but there is a train? Well then, take the train!

I cannot confirm that at all. Especially here in the countryside, almost everyone gets their driver's license at 17 or 18 years old. People tend to give you strange looks if you still don't have a driver's license at 19. However, it may be true that the small portion of those who don't get their license immediately has increased. The son of an acquaintance quickly moved to the city, and all the friends there also don't have one. So it strongly depends on whether you grow up in the countryside or in a big city.

My cousins (18/19) basically don’t get anywhere either, but at least they take the train then. They even voluntarily traveled with a few friends using only regional trains from Munich to the North Sea. (This was before the 9-euro ticket, but there were also quite cheap group tickets for regional trains only.) They actually found it pretty cool, although it was exhausting in the end... I don’t think it’s that bad in that form either, (you really don’t need a car in Munich now). Mom would still like them to get a license and they’re not completely opposed to it, but they just can’t really bring themselves to do it...

I can only really imagine the scenario of “being driven halfway across NRW to university every day” if dad also works around the corner. Otherwise, I don’t really buy it, purely logistically.

That's also how I knew it from my youth. But back then I was half as old, maybe times have changed ;) The GU is located in the border area SIG/TUT, which is definitely not an area where you just travel by bus. And trains only run along the Danube Valley, but at least they run hourly.
