Oh yes. Getting rid of the neighbors is just a nice side effect.

Well, that's a bit simplistic. From the perspective of someone who has now lived away from home for 12 years (studies, then a job in the area of the university, and so on) – I already feel drawn back home. Enough to take on many organizational hurdles to make it happen. Of course, not everyone values family equally, and some may even be estranged. But I would like to think that the majority of people at least have a reasonably good relationship with their family. For us, the main trigger for relocation is really the possibility to spontaneously be involved in family matters again. Birthdays, holidays, just Sunday coffee or a trip with grandma. Families with children will probably understand what it means to see grandma only once a year. Our view on this distance has changed enormously, especially with a child.

You can have a very good relationship with family without living 2 blocks away. There is also the opposite case that parents, especially mothers, show up every day, causing married life to quickly go down the drain. My mother-in-law (67 years old) lives 500 km away from us. And we see her at least 5-6 times a year (I don’t mean Skype :-) ). I don’t understand why children then see their grandma only once a year. 500 km is not a long distance. You can even quickly drive there for an extended weekend. It’s all very doable.

That was not only referring to you. But when I – we just have our high school reunion coming up – see where we all ended up, then moving and shifting the center of life away from the hometown (I would consider an hour’s travel time as moving away, since then you have to establish a new center of life and no longer commute "home") is common practice.

You can't really compare moving away with a one-hour travel time to moving away with six or more hours of travel time.
If we had moved away an hour away, the question wouldn't have come up.

But earlier, to counteract construction costs, it was demanded that people please shift their main residence further away where it is cheaper. Depending on the area, we're talking about more than an hour of travel time.

On the topic of the graduating class: I also know some who, like me, moved further away. In some cases only 3-4 hours. However, some of them are not very happy with the decision and are considering reversing it.

Would you have been withdrawn as well if your home had been as expensive as Munich, and you could only have afforded a small 3-room apartment there? You are lucky now that you can relatively easily build an expensive new house again. I meant “great” new house, not “expensive”
