Or your assumption is based on the faulty premise that in the past every student who did not obtain the Abitur was not smart enough for it.

That is rather the truth. That's why not everyone wanted to do the Abitur. As a car mechanic or another trained, non-academic worker, you could finance your own house with a garden as the sole earner. Even without extensive own contribution, you just worked more shifts. But yes, the expectations have also increased. On the other hand, some things have become much cheaper in relation to the average monthly income. Look at white goods and brown goods, nowadays you get really good stuff for a fraction of a monthly income. I claim that in the past, half (yes, also a fraction, but still a large one) to two months' income went into that. By "in the past" I mean me 40, 50 years ago.

Why do people always assume building? Buying is also promoted with it, there are also nice condos. And that already exists, it's called the Z15 subsidy.

I can tell you how it was with my grandparents. My grandpa was a civil servant in the lower service at the railway, and my grandma worked as a cleaner. According to the old documents, the total amount was 110,000 DM. Of this, the land was listed at 10,000 DM and the house at 100,000. But of the 100k, 50k was labor they did themselves. Among other things, my grandpa dug out the cellar himself with a shovel and wheelbarrow. In the 10 years after building the house, there were no vacations and no other unplanned expenses. So, sacrifice was required. The first vacation my father took with my grandparents was when he was 19. It was often the case in the past that many other areas were sacrificed for the dream of a house, but who wants that nowadays? By the way, my grandparents built in 1968.

Absolutely, that was the case for me too back then. My comment referred to the topic of subsidies. And in the previous posts, the criticism was directed against the planned measure, since building a single-family house would not be possible under the funding conditions. Hence my note. And yes, often buying and renovating existing property is more expensive than new construction. That does not have to remain so in the current situation, is often also regionally different and just as often a matter of expectations. Also not to forget that families can also live in condominiums. Some actually do it ;)

But that’s also a bit of a thing. It’s usually not really cheap. Here in KN, the square meter started at €5000 in an old building, so you’re laying down half a million then. Even if you move a bit further away, let’s say Radolfzell, you quickly spend €350k, rather €400k. Sure, cheaper than a new single-family house, but I understand something else under affordable. And when you think about everything you don’t have for that: a garden, distance to the neighbor,...
