It was indeed sensible and necessary, especially this year. When I looked at the plants at the edge of the field that didn't get any water, I knew that I wouldn't have wanted my garden like that.
When it is constantly hot and there is no rain for over 2 months, at least I stop watering the lawn. Yes, it turns yellow then, but fortunately grass is like weeds, it comes back very quickly. Watering against that seems to me not sensible or a waste of resources. Only water where it is really necessary. Crops, because otherwise no yield, and plants that indicate water shortage. Not before.
Moreover, plants benefit little from being used to water. Constant watering only spoils them, causing roots to grow shallow rather than deep. Of course, new plants must be watered well so that they have a chance, but after that... I just grin when neighbors install irrigation systems in the hedge - completely unnecessary.
