Well, that’s true. I’m not a fan of tying myself to a mobile provider for several years because of one device. Basically, you’re just paying off the phone in the plan. I can just as well buy it in installments from another dealer if I can’t afford the device outright. In my opinion, this "phone for 1€" nonsense is just a con.

However, under certain circumstances, it can be cheaper with the phone than buying the phone separately.

I wouldn't agree with that. You can actually get pretty good deals, even for less than your 23€, for two people each with a phone, if it doesn't have to be high-end.

I can't say for every phone with certainty, but at least for my current one it wouldn't be a good deal.
I paid €435 for my phone from the big online giant. With the mobile provider, I would pay €33/month with a contract for 36 months. If I then deduct the €13 that my contract currently costs me, I come to 36*€20 for the device, which is €720. For that, I could almost buy 2 devices directly.

You wouldn't do that either. Broaden your perspective a bit, then it would have been less. 435:24=18+13 your contract, this fun costs you €31. May I ask which phone?

Pixel 7. Wanted to move away from Samsung because it feels like with every generation the batteries get worse. Except possibly with the flagship, I don't know. I'm not willing to spend that much money on a phone. Your calculation with 435/24 still doesn't add up - if I took the contract for 24 months, it would be 38€/month, so still significantly more expensive than buying the phone outright. But we're drifting off-topic, everyone can do as they please. In any case, I've rarely seen a contract with a phone that made financial sense. I said rarely on purpose, not "never".
