From what I have read here, the outcry from single-family home owners is not really loud. It is always the heirs who complain about the poor condition of their new inheritance. Yet an inheritance can be so easily rejected.

Just wait. In this forum, new buildings are strongly overrepresented, so the problem occurs rather rarely here. And those who buy an existing property know that it will be expensive. But in the next few years, some will find that their broken heating system becomes significantly more expensive than expected. Because then it’s not just a new oil burner or a gas boiler that’s needed, but the switch to a heat pump with its follow-up costs. The other renovation obligations are not cheap either. The heirs are naturally affected a bit more because old systems often have [Bestandsschutz]. But if something breaks, the [Bestandsschutz] also disappears.

The fit people in their 70s and 80s on the ski slopes or racing bikes are not at work right now but are enjoying their lives in good health. I know few who work longer, and they are gently smiled at because of their old-fashioned views.

Am I the only one who finds it legitimate to just live out a property when entering retirement? If the roof leaks, you can patch it. Yes, that's how renovation backlogs occur, but who cares anymore? It just has to hold until day x, and after that, it doesn't matter. And about the heirs... they can be glad if they inherit such a house. Who seriously complains about that? That's a huge gift.

I know that without regular work I become depressed, so I will keep working. Whether in the old job or something completely different, I don’t know. Certainly not 60, 50, or 40 hours per week, but I have to do something. When I can no longer work, I will sell everything and spend my fortune. The goal is to be exactly at zero with funeral costs by the time of death. Let’s see how to manage that. Maybe in 40 years there will be a package deal with a promotional price.

How do you know when day x is? Remember that you could still live quite a long time, and I wouldn’t like living in a totally dilapidated house by then.
