hehe. I couldn't live there with the current fuel prices, a holiday at Lake Garda by car would cost a fortune :D

That's true. We made that mistake because it was only about financing our plot of land, which we wanted to pay off after the 5 years with our life insurance policies. Too bad that the life insurance policies are now going into the house due to construction cost increases and we will try to arrange a forward loan. Oh, upon reading again, I realize it might have been a misunderstanding.

Hindsight is always 20/20; today I also know the lottery numbers from Wednesday.

No one could have known that.

I love the Neuseenland and its people, and that's why I moved away from the south. Never regretted it. :)

No one could have known, but I have always said that we would not keep interest rates permanently at the 0-1% level. Even though many argued "Italy and others would go bankrupt with rising interest rates"... no, they won’t with simultaneously rising inflation. Italy was not bankrupt even before the zero-interest phase, especially since Italy as a state is mainly indebted to its own citizens and banks. Italy can reduce its debt through moderate inflation.
Even with slightly rising inflation (2-3%), it was clear that interest rates would eventually rise slightly again. Therefore, we argued: secure the low interest rates long-term now! 1.5-1.9% for 30 years is still cheap and below (at that time) inflation. Securing 0.7% for 10 years is basically only a short, seemingly cheap flash in the pan.
