Realism is sometimes mistaken for a lack of imagination and a refusal to question things down to their essence. Sometimes also for clinging to the familiar.
There is so much truth in your sentence. Very good.
The ratio of existing buildings to new construction is about 10:1 (!!!) You simply can't electrify everything. That is absolutely unrealistic! Also think about the electricity supply. The grids are already more than overloaded... Especially if at some point we all have to switch to electric cars.
Even if you think about hydrogen (it’s also a gas!), that can only work if all existing gas pipelines are replaced (who is supposed to pay for that?). Unfortunately, the existing gas pipelines are not suitable for H2. Besides, H2 is about 3 times more expensive than natural gas.
When you think about climate goals, you must not only think about single-family houses. They are negligible in the overall consideration...
So many concerns in one post. Actually the perfect example of what Hampshire wrote. It is astonishing what humanity has achieved so far in its history, only to apparently let further development fail because of a piece of copper and gas pipes in this case.
From a very short-term perspective, your concerns might be valid, but I think future society will no longer be able to understand your concerns.
The fact that single-family houses cause only a small part of the climate problems does not justify not paying attention to them at all. I really cannot understand such statements. There is always someone who does something even worse than oneself, but that’s how we all remain stuck in place.
