Ah, then I think in a different direction: old field path on both properties or something like that. We recently had that too, easement, regarding the fence because of the deer with kaho674 I think.

Only the speaker can be helped.

The neighbors have probably always done it that way and no one has ever complained. How are they supposed to know?

Is the hedge really on his side and not on the boundary and therefore also your hedge? Maybe the good gentleman believes you should work on it together and is already so kind and trims your stuff too?

I would talk to him, I also have many hedges, the neighbors even cut their side there. If it bothers them, then I also wish that they would say something.

I think you’re seeing this a bit tense. If I understand correctly, the neighbor planted the hedge that is allowed as a boundary. It stands on his property, he takes care of it, and you don’t do anything. To me, that means you have a free hedge including maintenance without having to give up your own land. Your only sacrifice is that the neighbor steps onto your land sometimes to trim it. Oh well. I would rather be thankful for that. And if the compost really bothers me that much, I would ask him if it could be enclosed a bit on my side and offer him help with that. Your land remains your land even if someone steps on it sometimes. Don’t worry.

We could be your neighbor ;) On the one hand, we planted a hedge, carefully respecting the allowed distances. Unfortunately, our neighbor has rarely been home... and when he is, he doesn’t always find time to mow his lawn. Unfortunately, the result is that his lawn keeps growing further onto our property. We have now set paving stones as a boundary, and when my husband mows, he also mows 29cm of his lawn. However, we make sure he is not there. This achieves damage limitation because he approaches the matter of the boundary somewhat indifferently. Since he doesn’t care about our side of the hedge either, it is cut from his property. We also pull weeds on our side, which we wouldn’t have in such quantities if he ever did anything. In this respect, he is glad when we do our thing and thus have no demands on him. By the way, like you, he has every freedom to install his own hedge or fence. But he doesn’t for the same reason as you: the costs and later effort. Why do owners actually get weird? :)

I can tell you. That’s the typical German mentality. I paid for it, no one is allowed to touch it without asking me.

Sometimes I think many don’t know what a social society means. There are do-gooders everywhere but also angry citizens. But woe if something goes against them.

Good example: 3 neighboring houses have an unreliable janitorial service. Sometimes it didn’t even take out their trash bins. I warned my neighbors twice (they have a street chat) because otherwise they would have full bins for weeks. Words like “Thanks for the hint” or a personal word never came.

I left the chat and don’t act like a clown for them anymore. Now I always look mischievous when the bins get forgotten again :)

I think I’m slowly turning into a bad neighbor too.
