Another reason to have something done is quite simple: efficiency (although not everyone has the prerequisites for it). If you can pay the craftsman, feed your family, and save time compared to doing it yourself all with one day of good-humored work, then "having it done" is simply efficient. You enjoy your own effort, the craftsman's result, and still have a leisurely walk with the dog, play with the children, cook, or do whatever else you feel like for the rest of the day.

Thank you for the encouraging words. I see it exactly the same way, but I also want to learn and discover new things; if I only focused on what I can do, I wouldn’t get far. Up to now, I have done all these things for the very first time in my life: setting L-stones, building a staircase, constructing a terrace, building a pergola... but I like to grow with my tasks. But I have to be honest, with this monster pergola, I begged my wife in between to keep me from such ideas in the future. The next project will now be to free the garage from all the wood dust! And even more honestly: if I had the money, I would gladly leave the entire garden facility to the professional! But as it is, the pergola only cost me 700.-€ in pure material costs. And pride comes free!

At the same time, you forget that it can also be really fun to make something yourself..... that is also extremely efficient.

We do everything ourselves during the renovation. Of course, we are no masters, but you never stop learning. My first plastered spot fell off again after two hours. The next walls got better; by now it looks really good. My first laid tiles were slightly uneven; the oil tanks stand on them anyway. For the tiles in the visible area, I knew what to pay attention to and they look good. For the first painted door frame, I used the wrong paint and also painted over the seal *laugh* – but with the right paint and without the seal, it turned out pretty perfect.

I don’t aim to do everything perfectly – sometimes that also takes way too much time. I decide whether small flaws would bother me. And that’s for me the difference compared to craftsmen: The joints at the sink, which I often look at, have to be absolutely straight. The joints under the toilet, on the other hand, don’t have to be one hundred percent perfect because they are simply not visible. I can decide myself where I want to work very precisely (and then also rather time-consuming) and where not. The craftsman does his thing; he doesn’t worry about small tolerances.

I am still in awe in my mother-in-law’s bathroom. It was done by a master tiler, took many days, but it is so perfect that it is almost too perfect. Everything fits perfectly. That’s craftsmanship that no DIYer can compete with.

So we will do almost everything outside ourselves and inside "the usual" (wall and floor coverings except for the tiles in the bathroom). I enjoy things like that but honestly, if we had the money, I would have it done... because I also enjoy a barbecue evening on the finished terrace...

However
The measure must fit.
Too much can quickly turn into the opposite

I love digging in the soil. That's why I would never give up planting.
