We do everything ourselves during the renovation. Of course, we are no masters, but you never stop learning. My first plastered spot fell off again after two hours. The next walls got better; by now it looks really good. My first laid tiles were slightly uneven; the oil tanks stand on them anyway. For the tiles in the visible area, I knew what to pay attention to and they look good. For the first painted door frame, I used the wrong paint and also painted over the seal *laugh* – but with the right paint and without the seal, it turned out pretty perfect.
I don’t aim to do everything perfectly – sometimes that also takes way too much time. I decide whether small flaws would bother me. And that’s for me the difference compared to craftsmen: The joints at the sink, which I often look at, have to be absolutely straight. The joints under the toilet, on the other hand, don’t have to be one hundred percent perfect because they are simply not visible. I can decide myself where I want to work very precisely (and then also rather time-consuming) and where not. The craftsman does his thing; he doesn’t worry about small tolerances.
I am still in awe in my mother-in-law’s bathroom. It was done by a master tiler, took many days, but it is so perfect that it is almost too perfect. Everything fits perfectly. That’s craftsmanship that no DIYer can compete with.
