thanks for the compliments I'm also super proud of the house. Unfortunately, the interior is still a bit ugly (built in 1976, and you can tell) and the garden could still use some love... but you can't tear yourself apart, that would be a shame
Just in the first house picture from this thread you can see, I think, how super beautiful and brand new a house can look after renovation! Really top!
OT post.
Well, especially the years 1970 to 1985 show quite a few things that reflect the taste of that time, which today in many ways diametrically contradicts current norms.
My former "Aufheim-I" is from 09/78 (move-in).
Back then: super modern – even today practically KFW100 standard. With Gisoton bricks and much more. My father (now well over 80) really did a great job. And already back then with an air-water heat pump (!) (which made noise at the time, which caused the neighbors trouble, creepy).
At that time: the developed square meter of land cost an incredible 27 Marks. Let's say for simplicity: 15 euros. A plot with over 1000 sqm: back then almost nothing.
1992 same place (Aufheim-II): 800 Marks = 400 euros.
Today: Let's not say the prices anymore, because it hits you hard per square meter. 800 (EURO) +xxxx.
I saved Aufheim-I exactly 23.5 years ago – 3 days before the foreclosure auction.
As a very young man, I rigidly opposed the great lack of reason of the divorcing parents (people who divorce generally tend to act somewhat irrationally), found a buyer. To this day, I am in good contact with this buyer family. Because I like Aufheim-I and the people who bought the house. Whenever I’m there: I take a quick look at the house (and also go inside). The craftwork is still in very good condition. Kitchen: like new, although built in 1978 (astonishing). All bathrooms: like back then – maintained and good, even the mirrors. Unbelievable.
Well... kitchen is white, timeless. The striking thing is the quality of the part, really like 100% new!!!
Bathrooms: Well... actually... "pure horror." Even as a 13-year-old I didn’t want that color design of tiles and so on (---> dispute with parents, they won). Orange. Green. Yellow. Brown. Ochre. Terrible & you just want to run away.
And how on earth can you install such dark interior doors in a small house? And forget that a hallway also needs DAYLIGHT (the architect was actually okay and usable, but sometimes he must have had lapses! Good for me – I never made these mistakes in Velbert-I).
How can people think of making wooden ceilings in the style of 1965? I don’t know. It will never make sense to me.
Luckily, wallpapers don’t last forever... the new "" owners have done a lot (plaster, super cool). Back then, in 5 rooms, 17 types of wallpaper were glued on. Also those fabric wallpapers. Unforgettable to me: parents on a cure, me with then best friend in the house. New Year's Eve effect blank pistol in the coffee? Great idea. Let’s see what happens (we were 14). Effect was brilliant. Cleaning the wallpaper took 4 hours, the hairdryer was still crackling when the parents returned. Laugh.
Is all this ugly from back then?
Nooooooooo. Certainly not.
Somehow, some things from that time are so very odd (colors), that it’s almost good again. A lot of that stuff actually has charm again.
And back then quality was built. And very good quality at that.
And so every time I see Aufheim I: tears come to my eyes.
What you find ugly about your house: just replace bit by bit. There’s enough time for that.
You can do it.
Best regards,
Thorsten
