Yes, exactly that also surprised me. So if 40cm² are included, do we have to pay an extra 65 € for 30cm²? We are not talking about rectified tiles and no miter cuts or the like are made! Wow!

Well, if the tiles are smaller, then the surcharge makes sense to some extent because installation is more laborious. I can’t say to what extent the prices are excessive.

I think the surcharges are quite steep. I might complain again and try to negotiate the price down. As a comparison: Our tiler charges 45€ net per m2 for laying (30*60 cm). So not as a surcharge, but as a normal price.

That’s not entirely true. The mats are so flexible and wobbly that you really have to work carefully to lay them completely flat and with precise joints. Touching up is also not as easy as with tiles.

Precise cutting is also not easy with mosaic mats. Tile cutters don’t work (you can’t just run them through), so you either have to use an angle grinder, which makes precise cuts more difficult, or work with tile nippers. Straight cuts are difficult there, too. With an oscillating tool, the individual mosaic pieces slip away, so you have to clamp them individually. In the future, I would never do mosaics again, even though I like the way they look. Technically, they’re not exactly great either (high grout proportion).

I would also NEVER EVER!!! have mosaic laid as a floor. We had it in a walk-in shower. First use after renovation. It looked chic, but after a few months I just hated scrubbing and steaming the grout constantly.
