It wasn’t meant in a bad way either

The 1-2cm overhang with us is already included in the 29cm

That’s why use proper material there and not some hardware store junk. Then you can clean it properly.

Why does a nice staircase reduce usability? It always depends on which rooms are downstairs in the basement. In the past, the basement was simply a storage room, that is definitely no longer the case today. Our basement corresponds in standard to the above-ground rooms, only the ceiling is a bit lower.

We now have an open steel stringer staircase in the living area. But also with wood, of course

Basement natural stone because it is sturdy, wood above. It is a great solution. Stair risers as the colleague writes above are wipeable, so they stay nice. These are painted textured panels. Really top. Under no circumstances should one paint there, it gets dirty extremely fast.

Basically, you are right, but purely visually, stone/tiles are just not my thing.

We also have a wooden staircase to the basement and to the upper floor. Upstairs a folding staircase in oak, downstairs spruce three-layer with matching risers. However, it must be said that we also have an outside staircase to the basement, so if it gets dirty going down, then from outside via the granite stairs.

What exactly do you always make dirty in the basement?
