Why different roofs? They are 98% gable roofs with additional gables. The floor plans beneath are more "open." Around here, people currently like to build square, cubic, rectangular. The partly tiny (because unaffordable) plots prevent other shapes - it is rather not the zoning plans.

That really looks like that in Australia, my husband is from there. I generally find the design of the cities there enormously beautiful. But you must not forget that they have almost unlimited space. I’m attaching a photo of Brisbane that we took from an elevated point. It is a metropolitan city with millions of inhabitants, but there is only a small "skyline" right in the middle; the rest of the buildings are rather low-rise and everyone has plenty of space. However, this is reflected in commuting times. My husband says the 30 minutes he now has to commute to work doesn’t bother him at all; he is used to commuting one hour each way by bus from home, within the same city.

To be fair, one must say that Brisbane itself is very spread out even for Australia. You really don’t feel like you’re in a city of a million. For me, that’s what creates the vibe in Brisbane and is the advantage of Brisbane (and also Melbourne) compared to Sydney. The only downside is that there are no long summer evenings like in Northern Europe.

Just for comparison (according to Wiki):
Brisbane: 412 inhabitants/km2
Melbourne: 490 inhabitants/km2
Sydney: 1060 inhabitants/km2

Hamburg: 2443 inhabitants/km2
Munich: 4777 inhabitants/km2

The numbers do not directly say anything about the inner city area, but I think they give a good feeling for the conditions.

Yes, even the very central downtown in Brisbane didn’t feel like the downtown of a metropolis to me. It’s remarkably open and nicely kept (Queen Street etc.), and impressively clean. There isn’t a single cigarette butt lying around anywhere. No comparison to Berlin or the like. My husband also likes the summer evenings here. One June, we were sitting with friends at a barbecue when he was in his first year in Germany. At some point, I said, "we have to go home soon, I have to work tomorrow." He almost fell off his chair when he saw it was already half past ten and still light outside.

somewhere here in Australia.

You can find loads of pictures like this on Google, it's not Germany where everything is forbidden. I recommend the website realestate dot com dot au. In DE there is no proper real estate website. In the UK rightmove is even better.

There are not sidewalks everywhere, for example not on my street. The first 3m (verge) belong to the municipality, you are allowed to walk on it.

In the picture the residents are really punished, if they also have grass between the street and the sidewalk, it makes a lot of work (edging) if you maintain it yourself.
