I’ve seen a cheap power strip fail. It got scorched. The smell is terrible. Fortunately, nothing else happened. Since then, I’ve been careful and only use ones with overload and voltage protection.

Unfortunately, that doesn't help you much. Every laptop or phone power supply is a much bigger danger. Actually, every plugged-in device.

I don't see it that way. I've sold those things for years. Yes, there were a lot of complaints about defective power adapters. But nothing beyond that ever happened. Power adapter replaced, done. With the power strip, on the other hand, it was lucky that nothing worse happened. But whatever, everyone acts according to their experiences.

And you still have cables anyway with more sockets (the ones on the devices). I appreciate both, but find your argument very good and will try to find a middle ground in our house.
