We have to illuminate them. At most, you can distinguish between backlighting and spotlighting.

In Berlin, you also have to use capital letters. So if you have an additional house number, you can already rule out half of all house number sets because they include lowercase letters. Fortunately, I don’t have that problem.

It always depends on where you live... If the number sequence in the area makes sense and the houses/entrances are not hard to find, the number definitely does not have to be illuminated or hung on the house in a 5-meter size, so to speak. Ultimately, every emergency service has navigation/GPS and can surely find the addresses relatively well this way (of course, provided that the residential area is also reasonably laid out).

We had our painter who did the facade (white plaster) paint it in silver gray. He had a stencil made for this.

That is simply wrong. There are plenty of areas where an illuminated sign is mandatory, regardless of how logical or obvious the numbering is.

Actually, that's true – I didn't know that at all!

At least here in BaWü, it's not a regulation.

The typical regulation that is more or less standardized everywhere:

"clearly visible from public traffic routes and appropriately sized" --> This is basically always the case, as long as you don't hang your sign behind the house xD, plus it's always a matter of interpretation.

I would do what you (OP) like and just place it so that it can be seen from the sidewalk or the street.

I put up our house number about 3 weeks ago as well. At first, I wanted 12cm size but my wife thought that was too small, so we went with 20cm  And honestly: (die Hausnummer) didn’t need to be smaller ;) The model is from Metzler, black Arial. It was important to me that the number stands out a bit from the facade. Luckily, we only have one digit. With several, installation probably isn’t always that easy...
