I totally get you! We inherited the house from my husband’s grandmother and have been renovating the upper floor for almost four years as a holiday apartment for ourselves. :D The brother lives on the ground floor and finished the renovation two years ago. The house is 400 km away from where we live, so we can only work on it during long weekends and holidays. We had planned so much for this holiday. And we probably only accomplished 10%? and opened new construction sites instead. Instead of finally renewing the floors in the kids’ rooms and renovating the old box windows, we had to dig out an old cesspit that was about to collapse. And repave the yard. And have a tree cut down for that. And it all started with the brother’s harmless greeting: “I wouldn’t park there, there’s this weird new dip with a crack that’s somehow getting worse.”

By the way, the built-in shelf in the bathroom was thrown out halfway through the work because we, i.e. my husband, didn’t feel like cutting the tiles for it. Hang in there. In five years, half the pain will be forgotten.

Actually, I'm suffering along with you right now... but as I already said: don't get discouraged. I asked so many people when they were finished with the house AFTER moving in. And so many still did exterior landscaping, interior fittings, etc. years later. We actually did a lot of "quick and dirty" work in the rental apartments upstairs because the deadline was fixed. But my own utility room still isn't finished after a year! (so the washer-dryer is with my nephew next door in the apartment ;-) The whole issue of starting new construction projects because you always come up with a better idea here or for that, I can relate to that so well... Maybe really do nothing for a whole weekend and go to the sea? We had to allow ourselves that in between because we also reached a point at which we were totally exhausted (and frustrated) ;)

,

I sincerely hope that you can enjoy your little house soon. I am still deeply impressed by what you are accomplishing. And yes, your reporting is top-notch and .... entertaining, thanks for that as well. It's nice that at least here there is no discussion about cents and gas.

I never thought I would write posts in this thread again, but here we are. :) Last week the foundation slab was poured here and this week the masons started. It's quite exciting to see. With a ring beam and stuff – you usually don't need that in flat Lower Saxony.

Wow, you really carried out your project quickly.

Do you have a thread somewhere where I can read about what you are building now?

I once had a floor plan discussion thread. But I stopped following it at some point.
In the end, we chose almost exactly the floor plan that was generally not so well received in the thread back then. We still think it's great. In the end, it's a matter of taste. I might open a project thread tonight with some pictures of the planning.
