Taste is practically everything or nothing, but the rule has a reason, namely to make the joint "less visible." This, in turn, is only a desired effect when the surface as a whole should appear more uniform. In "wood look" and the like, irregularity is supposed to support the authenticity of the in reality patterned repeated decor, i.e. it is precisely the intention to make it recognizable (or even to emphasize) that the surface consists of "individual planks." The emphasis on longitudinal and transverse stripes comes more into play where the brightness of the individual elements (or even within an element the contrasts between the base tone and the grain) changes more strongly.Well, that seems to be an elongated, narrow room. Laying it turned by about 90° would make it appear even longer and narrower.
