Often one reads concerns that one of the 17 children might fall in there..... although... it might then come out below again

With our neighbors who have 3 boys (real little rascals, mind you...) the two older ones first tried whether the youngest would fit through. Result; he fit! :-)

On another note; how do you make the shaft soundproof? In our utility room the heating, the ventilation system, and what feels like the washing machine and dryer three times a day make noise. I wouldn’t want that noise level to be transmitted upstairs...

Cover at the bottom, cabinet door in the kids’ bathroom, and cover in the parents’ bathroom at the top.

Noise doesn’t bother me that much there. But the airflow.

Not that one, but in our house there is an inexplicable magic to me that clothes wash themselves from the laundry basket and reappear neatly folded in my wardrobe. I am very grateful for that.
