Normally, shoes are taken off right behind the front door here. Sometimes there are exceptions for visitors - if we are going to mop afterwards anyway. Or if there is a garden party in the summer, not everyone who just wants to use the bathroom has to take off their shoes. But upstairs, always. The window cleaners wear shoe covers, the chimney sweep also took off his shoes... I think that is simply common nowadays compared to before.
