I live in Belgium. Apparently, people here don’t want houses to look pretty. There is something like a loosely enforced building code. Its first paragraph reads: build ugly, even if it could be beautiful. Here are a few amusing examples (found under: ugly Belgium houses.)

, would you be happy if your neighbors built one of these fancy little houses? They are definitely, ehmm, “individual” or “loosened up” (two adjectives that should actually always be automatically written in red so that you recognize the nonsense from afar).

The castle is really great, I would take it immediately if I had space for the corresponding wild garden around it! (Die Fenster sind allerdings übel, warum da so Kreise drin sind ??!)

The castle is probably just a Potemkin castle, I suspect behind the battlements sloping the pitched roof of a bungalow. But I like the terraced house in the middle with the grim face

They all look like botched surgeries.

I thought that was called "loosening up".

In the 6th picture you can see a terraced house with 2 entrance doors. At first, I was a bit puzzled about something like this in Rotterdam as well, until I understood that these houses have 2 owners. The left door is the entrance to the upper floor residential unit, the right to the ground floor residential unit. Since I had not seen anything like this before I lived in Rotterdam city center, it was initially something to get used to, but when you look at the apartment prices in such cities, it later made sense to me. There isn’t much building going on there but rather practical approaches.
