Why is this box installed in the facade in front of the house?
What is it good for?
That is the house connection box. There were long discussions with the city about it. It must be freely accessible to technicians in case of emergency, which is why it was not allowed to be placed in the carport (which would have been my preferred location).
The reasoning was that one might eventually retrofit a garage door and the city would no longer be able to access the box :rolleyes:

What would have happened if you had built with a basement?

It also works with a basement.
In principle, one can choose whether to have a house connection box (flush-mounted) or a house connection column. I think the box is the lesser evil, because where do you put the column?
