After our parents kept complaining that the stairs in our house have no handrail and especially the one to the basement is difficult for elderly people to walk on (one step less than going up – it couldn't be done differently), we finally got a handrail today:

A local steelworker made it for us; it’s made of raw steel (which was somehow treated so you don’t get black fingers). We like it very much. At first, stainless steel was considered, but this suits our place better.

Another thing done

well done ...
It has always been a mystery to me how such parts are crafted, because "everything has to be right" and the distances from one point to another are so far apart.
You can't just hold it up and then bend it a little ...

I also need a handrail (more precisely, I need the whole staircase) and I would like to bring in as much "swing" as possible – as they often did in the past ...
... an example:

How much does about one meter of that cost? We still also lack a handrail. Isn't it even mandatory? I think this topic has come up before.

I looked into it superficially. As far as I could find out, it is not mandatory in private settings. But as I said, superficially. At least the house was accepted without one.

As long as there is no official acceptance from the building authority, it is not a problem for now. The building regulations specify how fall hazards, stairs, etc. must be secured. In a single-family house, you can do it. In case of an accident, however, the insurance may refuse to pay.

Is there no obligation when small children live in the household? I think I heard something like that in NRW, but the railing requirement is regulated differently in each federal state.
