No, that's not what I mean. Whether an island or not: a wall next to a stove limits you, at least someone who juggles with several pots and also sometimes quickly has to put something, e.g., a pot, down next to the stove to continue handling it without heat.
My parents' kitchen as well as my grandparents', so over generations without an island, had the flame, that is the stove, free-standing, so enough space next to it. Only in a kitchenette or the 3-meter kitchen unit could it get a bit tight.
