Exactly. But we didn't want tiles with all the grout lines either. We installed the same granite there as the fireplace has.

Of course, that is the requirement! But in the end, everyone can decide for themselves whether they place the glass plate or not. We also have oak floorboards, and the glass plate is standing in the storage room. The fireplace is closed during operation and is only opened to add more wood; I almost believe it is impossible that such a spark flight occurs that something happens.

Our chimney sweep/fireplace installer also said that the plate is necessary for approval. But what you do afterwards is up to you. By the way, our fireplace is rotatable (180°), but the plate is only an L shape, so you would always have to rotate it as well, and it only covers an area of 30-40 cm. As I said, the important thing is to only open the fireplace carefully; then no sparks will fly, and in the case of a bigger incident, the plate would hardly offer any protection.

The building insurance is then happy in case of fire But yes, everyone must decide for themselves.

As I said, you just have to handle it properly (but that also applies to me with the "protection area"). Then no sparks will fly, and otherwise the fireplace is "fire/spark-proof" when closed. As I said, at least our glass plate (is from the manufacturer) does not really provide any real protection for me. It is actually too small and, due to its shape, rather "nonsensical." BUT I don't want to "encourage" anyone to omit it; that has to be decided individually. However, the area in no way replaces the need to handle the stove properly!

guckguck is right - if you ever have a fire and the expert finds that this protection was not in place, then they won’t pay you a penny, even if the fire has a completely different cause. So at least remember to put the glass plate in front of the stove before the expert’s visit.

It has nothing to do with whether this makes sense or whether there really is a risk of such a fire – if you don’t comply with the fire protection regulations and a damage occurs, the insurance will be rubbing its hands because then it is off the hook.

I would think carefully about it... (from an aesthetic point of view you are right)

We have 60cm in the stone of the soapstone stove as a protective area up to the parquet. Nevertheless, we have 2 burn marks on the parquet. If when adding wood a log "throws" the glowing ash outwards, it easily goes beyond that. Especially because when adding wood, you touch the hot stove and the adding process does not proceed as slowly and controlled as with the initial filling. So I advise everyone to have a larger protection.
