It is simply practical to have a seating option in the entrance area. Especially when you want to put shoes on the children.
Besides, you can quickly take off jackets without always having to trudge to the wardrobe.

I don't think it's bad if the space is there. However, there is a risk that the bench will quickly be occupied with jackets, etc., out of convenience—especially with (somewhat older) children.
