In my opinion, a classic show staircase would rather be curved.

My parents-in-law have the staircase in the kitchen and dining room and upwards there is a gallery so that half of the room has double height. It looks impressive and you can fit a huge Christmas tree in here (I think the tallest one they ever got was about 4 m tall :P). They bought the house and would have never planned it like that themselves, and especially when the kids still lived in the house (no matter what age they were) they hated it, mainly and above all because of the noise. Now that the kids have moved out, it’s not a big problem anymore since the noise level in the ground floor during the regular game nights can’t bother anyone anymore.

We wanted it that way on purpose: the stairs to the upper floor lead from the living area, the stairs to the basement lead from the hallway/entrance area. Upstairs we have a gallery above the dining area and for us that somehow belongs to the living area and is connected to the living area on the ground floor by the stairs. Unfortunately, we didn’t have enough space for a straight show staircase, so it is quarter-turn and not free-standing either because we also have a basement. However, we don’t have children (although most children I know play in the living room anyway) and our private area (bedroom/dressing/bathroom) is connected, so I don’t have to walk over the gallery in my nightgown to the bathroom but go there through the dressing room. Maybe there will be a desk on the gallery someday or I will paint there.

I am also a bit puzzled about the "children noise problem." The kids' rooms actually have doors, so they could be closed. The older they get, the more "soundproof" the doors are. The little ones prefer to play in the living room with the parents anyway, right? And if the sweeties neither close the doors nor are downstairs anyway, would the staircase in the hallway actually solve the problem? *scratches head*

I also voted against it, although our staircase currently leads into the hallway, but between the hallway and the living room there is only an open passage and no door. However, a door could be installed at any time.

I think it is rather meant that friends stomp up and down or the music is turned up upstairs so much that the TV in the living room can no longer be heard. A few walls and doors in between actually make a difference.
Conversely, the children may also be noise-sensitive when sleeping if the TV is still on in the living room or a partner regularly works night shifts, etc.

No, it is meant that the children are disturbed, the sound carries much better upwards when everything is so open, but maybe my in-laws' house is also poorly insulated in that regard. The kids sometimes really couldn't sleep when the parents downstairs had one glass of wine too many and argued about who had been robbed how many times by the robber in Catan. Maybe it also has to do with the fact that almost every family member already has a light and rather disturbed sleep. But my mother-in-law also said that she always heard exactly which child crept home late at night because the staircase leads directly up to their bedroom and you can hear it quite clearly. I think that is also because the staircase creaks a lot, no idea.
