I completed one some time after my training back then. Now, after my studies where I earn more than four times as much, the insurance I took out back then is a joke. Taking out a new one now is extremely expensive. Most only wanted to insure me until the age of 60 anyway. I will take the risk...

But that is like comparing apples and oranges if the employer has already taken out an occupational disability insurance for you and you are also insured through the pension insurance. From the year of birth 1961 onwards, there is no more occupational disability insurance of the pension insurance, only reduced earning capacity.

I think I pay between €600-700/year for just over €1,100 occupational disability pension monthly.

The question also troubles me regarding the BU. I have now been offered a model in which BU and Rürup pension are combined and both contributions are tax-deductible. But the Rürup pension doesn't really impress me either with the 1.5% guaranteed interest... I now pay €220 per month so that in 35 years I will get ~€400-700 out (which will probably then only be worth about €200-350). On the other hand, I would of course be happy in 35 years if I actually received the money. The BU portion would be about €700 per year... but in an emergency, my wife could probably cover the rate alone... it's all difficult. I have postponed the decision now until after moving in - then review all finances and see what is left over.

I just did a quick calculation for fun on the internet. To secure 75% of my net income, I (born 1972) am looking at over 2,000 per year (with the cheapest offers - no idea which benefits might then possibly be missing)! To secure just 1,000 € per month, I don’t need the insurance – that won’t get me far in case of emergency.

BU means that, in theory, you can still work, but no longer in the job you have worked in so far. In case of disability, there is still the statutory pension insurance. Since we are dual earners, the 1100€ (increasing dynamically) is sufficient for us. Expenses (e.g. apartment-workplace/second car) might also be eliminated.

Stay away from the combination pension and disability insurance. My credo: Such things should not be mixed. I also had something like that once, but discontinued it after I calculated everything...
