I have 400 sqm of decades-old wild growth. Last year, one bush didn’t survive. The rest is back again. I think a watering ban in the first 1-2 years is tough, some plants will die. That also means a lot of time and possibly money. After that, it should be okay.

Cisterns are now mandatory in the new development areas here as well. The water is returned to the cycle and nature, just with a delay. For example, on Wednesday night, there was a storm, today watering is needed again. Whether cisterns have negative effects on the water will be shown over time. I could imagine that cisterns might even have a positive effect in areas with heavy rainfall.

In our new development areas, not only cisterns but also retention cisterns are required. These release a certain percentage into the sewer system within a few days. So it is only a buffer, and this percentage is not usable for the owner. Well-established plants can tolerate drought for a while. I saw that last year with the almost 100-year-old hedge. But it depends on the plants and the soil. When you plant trees (meaning large ones and not those that only provide shade for the grandchildren), it usually takes 5-10 years for them to survive such drought. Lawns (not meadows) do not endure that. We have sufficient rainfall here (between 800-1000 L/sqm). With too much rainfall, it runs down the hill. So fortunately, it is not a flood-prone area either. The spring was also used by the neighbor. I had him fill his IBC containers again before construction began. He grows various vegetables and salads in his greenhouses. He is welcome to use water from my cistern again if needed. He sometimes gives me some of the yield in return...

We also learned that soil is not that precisely predictable. Risks priced in and it's manageable. Hopefully, after the earthworks, everything will be not only within the planned but also within the desired range.

What do you find annoying - the ban or watering with freshwater?

And until just now, I still thought our 5,000-liter rainwater cistern was innovative *cry*

But the rest with the ground is annoying...

We now also have to deal with the neighbor to the north side. His second wife wished for a rhododendron hill years ago in a corner of the garden that had been lying fallow until then. Then they nicely piled it up – but without supporting it on our side. That wasn’t a problem so far because the property on our side simply wasn’t used there. But now we have built there and after the last storms (for anyone interested: hail at Lake Ammersee and storms in Landsberg made it through the press) the soil is sliding onto our property. We don’t like that. And we are of the opinion: whoever piles up should also support it. I can’t just make a pile of earth that gradually moves towards the neighbor over time and in certain weather conditions. Years ago my brother tried to somewhat contain it using concrete slabs held up by metal rods. But that no longer holds. And the cherry laurel they planted there now has increasingly larger roots pushing this makeshift solution away. Now we want to suggest to him that we have a wall built from our side, but the costs are split equally. His advantage: the construction equipment comes from our side and his garden remains intact. Otherwise, we’d have to go through the building authority – which we actually don’t want. But we also don’t accept paying for a wall we wouldn’t actually need if he hadn’t piled up – and it definitely can’t stay like this. Well...

Let me know how your neighbor reacts.
