I have to disagree with you there. Most of our trades are actually not active in single-family house construction. The fact that things have gone so well for us so far has several reasons (in any order).
1. almost all local companies (where possible and sensible), no sub from sub...
2. most companies have known each other for a long time and work together frequently
3. good architectural firm with competent and present site management
4. deeply involved personally from the start
5. meticulous planning
6. personal contact with the trades
7. almost daily presence on site personally
8. constant project monitoring even though someone is actually paid for it
