Floor plan optimization city villa + fill consideration

I look at floor plans in catalogs. If a staircase leads straight up from the entrance, sometimes there is no window and no air space on the upper floor. Where does the light in the hallway on the upper floor come from? From the corridor below?

Lamps? Double casement windows? Skylight? Daylight spots? We cannot know that as long as the plan and the roof are not known.

I hope for the sake of my heart rhythm that you don’t now get the crazy idea that something would be easier with a single-flight straight staircase.
