I agree with you that some 3D programs (especially the free or inexpensive ones) sometimes distort or display poorly. Nevertheless, I am convinced that it helps many people, such as the OP, to better estimate room sizes, distances, and proportions. My wife also has trouble imagining herself in a floor plan. A cross-sectional view is already helpful.
By the way, our rather older stove builder from the deepest Lahn-Dill district created a proper 3D simulation for us unsolicited. I have to honestly admit that he convinced me as a customer with it because he went the extra mile... and that is very valuable when building!
