Where is the bottleneck?
Above the stairs, it is open up to the ceiling of the upper floor. So lots of space. That’s always the case when there is no staircase above. The light should be about the same as in the current design or even more. At the moment, you have a wall in front of half the window on the upper floor. Did you notice that?

Here’s also a view down the stairs, although the illustration shows a landing staircase, because my program can’t do the other one. The window and door frames all have a terrible color, etc., but maybe it helps to get an idea?

Now one could consider making the window floor-to-ceiling so that it is bigger and nicer. Then the ones next to it should also be floor-to-ceiling for the look, which wouldn’t be a problem.
