Living close to the city is, in my opinion, clearly overrated.
It depends on how close everything is. Shorter distances are especially great to cover by bike. No searching for parking, no traffic jams, and the weather isn’t so bad as long as the bike paths are cleared in winter. The short distances definitely add to quality of life; I will certainly miss the ability to get from door to office in 10 minutes (well, usually it’s just 10 meters to the home office...). And also the bouldering gym that opened just before the lockdown about a kilometer away. It’s really convenient within walking distance with a stroller, since the little one, of course, comes along ;)
What absolutely makes no sense is to live somewhere in the city and then take half an hour or 45 minutes every morning across town. And then go 20 minutes in the opposite direction for sports. In rural areas, one often has similar times.
