Does the door open inward or outward? What is normal?

But if a person is unconscious in front of the door and other body parts, e.g. feet, are on the opposite wall, the door cannot be opened at all. Here it is about smaller rooms such as [Gäste-WC]. Everything can always be justified somehow, some can even do it very well. It is a very personal matter what I consider important, for others it can be relatively unimportant. Both variants have disadvantages and advantages, nowadays both are done depending on who considers what important.

Exactly, it is a personal assessment of risk and taste. My thought only regarding the argument with the “unconscious person lying in front of the door and the emergency service can’t get in”: if the emergency service is already there, they will not be stopped by an ordinary living room door. If, as you described, it takes 1.5 hours to get to the person in an emergency situation (!), I would rather consider whether something else went wrong elsewhere. Seriously, wasting 1.5 hours in an emergency to climb through the window – on the upper floor? You destroy the door by kicking it in – assuming sufficient strength. The door frames are not made of concrete or steel but only glued. If you can’t get in that way, I would rather call the fire department, which will open the door with their tools – if necessary, even through the wall. But trying to climb the façade for 1.5 hours… I don’t know.

It becomes interesting if it is “only” a helping situation where you don’t need an ambulance or similar. Would you then want to destroy the door?! So one could construct something.

Another thought that crosses my mind: if someone is lying completely or partially in front of the door and unconscious, why can’t you get in? Yes, okay, it is more difficult, but the person is not leaning against it or concreted in place. If you open the door with sufficient force, you push the person behind it away. Okay, that is probably unpleasant for him, but he doesn’t notice it. As far as I see, the body would be pushed backward; there is still about 40 cm of space.

But as you say, everyone has to make their own risk assessment. It’s not about right or wrong, but the question was how one would do it. If you then state your reasons why you allow the door to open inward and personally do not see outward opening as mandatory and justify it accordingly, you should also be able to handle if someone would rather have it open outward. My 2 cents.

Whether 1.5 hours or 20 minutes, smashing the door with an axe or crawling in through the window, in an emergency 5 minutes is crucial. Depending on how severe the damage is, either you do not survive or you become a lifelong care case. (Ich hoffe niemandem so etwas)

You really have to take a close look at this. Elves… yes, they might feel comfortable in the WC and manage with the door opener. But not everyone has an elf figurine, and then it already becomes quite a hassle to get out of the room normally. You have to be in exactly the right position to even be able to open the door from the inside. And if someone really collapses behind the door, you can’t just easily break down the door with an axe… because you don’t even know how the person is stuck in the area behind the door. They could also be hanging halfway up.

For me, there would be no discussion here: door opening outward, but unlike this variant:

with a left hinge; then you enter into the open hallway and can also access from there.

I myself only have a rather small bathroom… the best idea was to have the door open outward.

This guest WC is roughly like ours, our door opens inward to the wall as shown in the plan, is also 77 wide, and I am not an elf, and that is no problem at all. Really none. Karsten ö
