You are right; that applies to many things we do or value. Traveling, driving cars, eating meat, heating the apartment/house, having water warm/cold whenever we want, and much more. It will be interesting to observe in which direction we (Western-socialized Central Europeans) develop on the path of renunciation. One question that arises for me in this context is, if we develop more towards "spiritual beings" (supposed to), whether and who would then still consider the necessity of externally determined work as necessary. If one rather indulges in spiritual pleasures and dwells in spiritual spheres (thinking/listening/seeing), one does not need very much money. But maybe I am overlooking too many aspects.

Unfortunately, I can’t assess that quite as comprehensively as what’s happening in front of my balcony. But my impression is that although buildings are somewhat lower, the area between the buildings is often just dead space. Friends of ours ended up in one of those generic 4-story flat-roof blocks that are now being built everywhere. There’s a paved path between the buildings and mostly gravel beside it. You don’t see any children playing there either.
Sure, you can build better, but I’m just missing concrete examples. Not in Düsseldorf and in planning, but completely real here on site and already built.

The children can’t be everywhere at the same time, they are happily riding tricycles there in the presentation pictures :)
