In chemistry, salaries vary everywhere depending on whether you work at BASF or elsewhere. Entry level is at E11, then there are only performance levels (after 2, 4, and 6 years) and of course reclassification.

How one develops over the years depends on the company and cannot be generalized. And also with regard to working hours, AT employees, i.e., non-tariff employees, usually have a 40-hour week, while everyone else has a 37.5-hour week.

So to my knowledge, it doesn't start at E13 in the public sector but at E9b or E10, which are each around 40 and 45k€ at level 3.

All academics I know started in E13 after their university diploma or Magister. That is also what scientific staff at universities earn, I myself had that for a year after my diploma. My first employment contract. In my opinion, E9 might be relevant for a Bachelor. Therefore, of course, there are lower salaries as well. It is always possible to earn less. But here, it was not about starting salaries, but about average salaries for academics, and the tariffs I mentioned certainly reflect reality. Always keep in mind that there is still much room for improvement, even in the tariff area.

That may be the case on paper, but you will never get an E13... E9 if you're lucky. You can deceive yourself, but for what? I know 2 people with an annual income over 70k, and many with under 40k, including academics. I am in between and unusually well paid in my industry, my former fellow students are rather close to 40.
