Hornbeam is indeed used for hedges. So it should be possible to keep it small. Just ask a landscape gardener or a nursery which trees you can keep smaller through pruning. Trees over 10 meters are not so great in residential areas with smaller plots. My parents have by now a huge walnut tree in their garden. I can still remember how my mother found the walnut with the small shoot. She simply put it back in.

Yes, hornbeam was the only one I stumbled upon as "feasible". However, it is not necessarily one of my favorite trees. Or rather, if I wanted to comply with the development plan (which I don’t want to ), I would still have to let it grow to at least 20 cm trunk circumference and 4 m height.

For this planting season, however, planting trees is probably no longer an issue. I’ll be glad when I soon finish my espalier and can establish my prairie bed (or rather a cut-down version of it). That will be enough for this spring for now.

Are you creating a prairie bed? For me, it is autumn. In about 6 weeks, the landscape gardener wants to build walls, fill up, etc. In autumn, I want to plant - even if the recommendation is spring.

It will be more of a mixed bed. Probably Clematis on the trellis, in front [Purpurglöckchen] (or something like that?), which should provide good shade for the Clematis at the base. In between, some prairie perennials, so far planned without grasses. Up to now, I mainly have [Indianernesseln], [Prachtkerzen], and [Schafgarben]. We'll see how much space is left and whether some [fette Hennen] or similar will be added; otherwise, oregano will be sown as a filler.

Have you already chosen plants for your bed?

I have not decided yet
At about 80 sqm, anything that pleases can be included
Definitely from ground cover to tall grasses and also bulb flowers for spring

By the way, Aldi, Lidl and netto have solar lanterns for the garden on Thursday. I'll get some, they look nice in the evening. K.
