: We had installed gutters on a wooden partition wall on the terrace and grew lettuce, strawberries, etc. in them - somewhat vertical but not true vertical gardening. As a visual frame and for privacy, we had a simple pergola made of Bangkirai in front of the house (actually just a kind of gate with 2 ropes as crossbars), covered with a wisteria vine. Wonderful scent and cool shade. We once had wild grapevine on the EastEastSouth wall. It looked great. I don’t exactly remember why it was removed. If you prefer something a bit more rustic, you can work with Euro pallets and use various hanging plants there. You hardly see the pallets anymore, and they are an easy way to hold soil horizontally. By the way, you can also grow tomatoes hanging out of a bucket through a hole at the bottom.

Thank you for the detailed response.

At the nursery, we were told that wasps probably love the Virginia creeper. The employee has a natural stone wall with Virginia creeper where the wasps gather, but it doesn't bother anyone there. However, right next to the terrace, I don’t find that very appealing...

I still have until next year to come up with something.

She is right, wasps love [wilden Wein]. However, wasps also eat mosquitoes. Since the wasps leave me alone, unlike mosquitoes, I welcome that. Hornets help against wasps; they are quite peaceful.

We have a wasp nest above the terrace under the roof. It's already a few meters. Not so great. They occasionally bathe in the drinks. But mh I could plant the wild grapevine on the other side of the house by the garage. Maybe then the terrace/play area will be less interesting.

Our wine on the house was eaten up by the wasps this year. It was quite an interesting feast for weeks – the dazed wasps then lay tipsy under the rose bush. We still had plenty of mosquitoes. But that doesn't bother me much, they don't sting me, only my husband has to suffer. I believe dragonflies also eat wasps, right? They also swarmed around the wine in great numbers at our place.

We are planning to plant privet hedges. The mother-in-law mentioned that small gnats (fruit flies?) tend to gather there. Do you have any experience with privet? Can you confirm this? Would you recommend a root barrier for privet? Thank you!
