So I don’t know any bamboo hedges firsthand in Germany but the birds in Queensland Western Australia, at my father’s old house back then, found bamboo cool and always used it to tease the cat...

No, well for native wildlife we plant natives like bottlebrush, etc. in the West. Bamboo is not so popular in the West, we lack the rain for it. Too high maintenance.

Bamboo at my brother's place, the variety that spreads aggressively. Although he installed barriers in the ground, I was shocked when I saw these pictures. He cuts it back about 1.5m every year up to the top of the fence and thins it out every 3-4 years. 7 plants on 6m, planted in 2011, the pictures are from this year.

Why were you shocked? That's a great hedge.
Here is another bamboo hedge, we bought the plants 3 years ago from classified ads for little money. It is now just under 2 m and is welcome to grow as tall as it likes.
