Wood chips work quite well for perennials. Many plants don’t like bark mulch at all.

I find straw best in the vegetable garden. I cannot share the experience of . I sometimes have 15-20 cm lying under tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, and zucchini.
Grass clippings must be applied repeatedly so that a thick dry layer forms. Always about 2-3 cm and the next one after 1 or 2 weeks. This works quite well in normal years; this year I had no clippings. If you apply too much at once, it becomes rotten and smelly. That’s why you shouldn’t put fresh grass clippings all at once into the compost.

I have applied pine mulch in my two flower beds on the recommendation of the [Landhändler]. That has helped a lot. Much less water needed (evaporation) and I also think it looks better. Only the stupid birds sometimes pick the mulch out a bit and I have to sweep it back. The layer is still a bit too thin though, I probably need to buy 3 or 4 more bags of 70l.
Weed is also much easier to remove, in bare soil it’s like baked on, under mulch it just pulls out.
And tomatoes and strawberries near the ground don’t rot as quickly.

For larger beds though, it really adds up money-wise o_O

I don't like bark mulch either. I also know why: if weeds do manage to grow through, it's hard to pull them out. You have to painstakingly pick them out.
In my view, perennial beds don't need mulch either; with me, there is little space between the plants after 2 to 3 years. I also wouldn't like it visually.

I don't think bark mulch is so great either. Sometimes it is simply practical and inexpensive.

The blackbirds love [Rindenmulch] and co. And yes, they do make a mess there.

...and what exactly does that have to do with an explanatory film about evidence-based science? Apparently only you know. It's a pity that whataboutism is always the response when facts are presented.

Well, once someone lies, unfortunately, people just don't believe them ... even if they are telling the truth.
