I'll try it in this wonderful thread: I have a "problem bed" which I would like to plant, but I can't find the right plants. It is as follows: - borders a cherry laurel hedge (comes from the previous owner, will be removed in the long run) that steals all nutrients from the soil and makes the soil rock hard - fairly steep (rise about 50 cm over 1.5 m width) - currently growing in it a currant and an alpine currant - light exposure: partial shade Do you have any ideas what could be a nice ground cover there, that blooms or similar? Best regards from the Rhineland

You can plant many things. For example, roses bloom. You can also go towards a prairie bed or natural with "wild" plants or Mediterranean. Ultimately, it has to fit the house and you.

Is it sensible to leave the [Kirschlorbeer] standing and plant [den Hand] in front of it? I would pull it out right away. You will probably trample half of the bed anyway trying to get rid of it.

It certainly doesn't make sense to leave it standing, but currently there is no alternative... It has been rooting there for 30 years, removing it will be a mammoth project... I like the idea with the roses, but then you probably won’t be able to reach the currant anymore... I like Mediterranean, do you think a low-growing flowering thyme can handle that? Alternatively, I also really like heath pink and grass pink, do you think they will work?

you can lay stepping stones in between. Roses are not able to withstand being stepped on. Sand thyme and dwarf lilac cushions should tolerate it.

I would not spend money if it is foreseeable that the hedge will be removed

Thank you very much for your tips. In the next few days, I will visit the local flower shop and try to implement the ideas cost-effectively.
