What would be your alternative? Evergreen and walkable, you should also be able to lie on it sometimes.

A mowable flowering lawn mixture. You get a very short meadow. You can put deck chairs on it that way. If you want to lie down directly, of course it's worse.

Creeping thyme: blooms purple or yellow, is soft, smells good and is maintenance-free.

But you can’t walk on it all year round. It has to grow tall sometimes.

Okay, I understand that. I can also imagine adjusting the lawn area in a few years. For now, having grass around the sandbox, swing, etc. is the nicest and most practical for me. Then we have a strip with beautifully blooming plants around the outside and by the terrace. That way, the whole thing is more open and colorful.

"Chlorophyll desert" ... grin

I think it is right to question the still valid norm: "A lawn must be mowed often." If you don't mow, you usually have to endure the strong opposition of neighbors in Germany: "impossible!, all the weeds ...." "Let nature take its course" – and thereby support plants and animals – I consider an important detail in the effort to treat the environment well. Every natural island helps! Even as a "normal person," you can visibly do something good directly. For that, you often get resistance.
