Yes, those are those Maurer tubs. A little bit… I hope there is enough soil "in the way". You can't taste it in the tomatoes. It just works perfectly for us… They can always go to the same spot and are pretty well protected there.

I also planned that back then, but then gave it up because of the plasticizers. The buckets can also smell quite strongly when new. But that goes away over time.

Mason buckets are used quite frequently. Mine are standing by the wall in the garden this year. South/East/West. I'm curious, especially since some can grow over 2 meters, one variety is even said to reach up to 4 m tall.

I only buy these mortar tubs when I need large containers. Although I almost always get dizzy at the hardware store when I have to walk past them, and I can only drive with the window open, I really can't justify paying nearly a three-digit amount for a container of this size.

I bought large plant containers for various tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, physalis, etc. - they don't look amazing, but they're better than mortar tubs. And they don't stink :) They are also reasonably priced - if I remember correctly, they were about 10 euros each.
