We planted the hedge in 2017. Only in the rather severely frosty January 2020 did it lose a significant number of leaves. Otherwise, they hold up. So it seems to have to do with the cold whether they are bare or leafy. Here in SH it is rarely cold for long, so they are mostly leafy here, even if the leaves are wilted and not fir-green. By the way, cold sharp east wind also defoliated the cherry laurel. It doesn’t like that either.

I think we will use the European beech then.

Basic question: Should I tackle this this year, or wait until spring?

It's about approximately 13m and will probably require the help of an excavator again...

At the moment I'm not really in the right frame of mind for it, so spring would actually be better for me.

Too late for planting, the roots no longer grow. Risk of drying out in frozen soil.
